Old Town long had a symmetrical lateen rig of 55 sq ft by the end of the season, a wood and canvas canoe can be fairly heavy.Įarly sails were cotton, then some were made in nylon. That lateen rig was around for many years.įor what it is worth department: the Grumman lateen was a symmetrical version with equal lengths for boom and yard, while the current ACA 45 footer and the earlier Red Cross rig used asymmetrical sails with the yard a good bit longer than the boom. On an 18 or 19 footer it put the sail and leeboard far forward. On a 15 footer or shorter, that made a kind of sense. The lateen was intended to be stepped in the bow. I have a 17 footer from 1975 which lacks it, another from 1976 has it. The rear tab only came in with the Class C rig, I believe, roughly 1976. ![]() If the other hard points were like sideways keyholes, or just little rounded bumps, they were for securing floorboards, now long forgotten.
